Originally constructed in 1973 and revamped in 2010 the Hartebeespoort Cableway is the longest mono-cableway in Africa. Fondly known as “Harties” by the locals it’s a must stop if you’re travelling through the North West province or if you fancy a day trip away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Situated on the Magaliesburg mountains with stunning views of Hartebeespoort Dam and the surrounding area, Hartebespoort Cableway is great for photographers and those who appreciate stunning vistas. No matter what time of the day you’re guaranteed to have your breath taken away!
Your journey up the mountain starts in one of fourteen hi-tech cable cars transporting a maximum of six people per car. You begin to feel the ascent immediately and I don’t recommend doing this if you have acrophobia (fear of heights). You cover the 1km climb in a peaceful 5 minutes while enjoying uninterrupted views that get better every second you ascend. Once at the top you gracefully try to exit the cable car (which I’m sure some people are better at than I was) and make your way up the ramp towards the Pizza Shack where you can enjoy a wide range of pizza’s while admiring the view over Hartebeespoort Dam. If you’d prefer to work up an appetite first you can venture round the 1km Dassie Loop where you can find the most amazing views over Harties as well as informative signs explaining interesting facts and points of interests that you can see from that particular spot. If you’re lucky you might catch a glimpse of some beautiful raptors soaring above the mountains or see Rock Dassie’s frolicking about the rock faces. Once you’ve worked up a thirst you can enjoy a soft drink or cocktail at the Lookout Bar and appreciate another angle of the vast body of water and never-ending landscapes. Don’t forget to pop into the gift shop before you end your day at “The Little Shop at the Top” to pick up an awesome Harties Cableway souvenir!
